Radish Salad- bhutanese style

Radish Hogay- a traditional cold side dish

“Laphu Hogay”, the cold radish side dish. Not every ones favourite i assume, because i hated it as a kid and wondered why the elders enjoyed it so much. However, after removing the bitterness of the Radish and throwing in enough spicy chilli powder, even i can handle it :). I  love it.

This simple recipe is for the radish lovers. We eat it as a snack in between meals, or as a side dish with the main meals. I am not sure if it is also enjoyed as a relish to Ara (local spirit) or any other alcoholic drinks. But i can imagine it going very well with the drinks.

Ok. here is what i did.

200 gr. Radish
20 gr. Cheese
1/2 Tsp Chilli powder
1/2 tsp of chopped chives
Salt to taste

Peel and cut radish into stripes. In a bowl, throw in radish, sprinkle 1 tsp Salt, and mix well. Keep aside for 5-10 minutes (skip the process if you don’t mind the bitterness of the radish).

Rinse the radish once or twice in cold water (drain out all water). Sprinkle in Cheese (i used my home made yogurt cheese) and Chilli Powder (substitute with milder versions depending on the tolerance). Gently mix the ingredients together with hand to combine well. Add chives and give it a toss again. Check salt and enjoy.
